This manor house is situated in Haut Anjou, in southern Mayenne. The historic town of Craon is 6 km away and offers most shops and services. Château-Gontier, 25 km away, has all amenities. Craon is a town of 4,500 inhabitants in the southern and western part of Mayenne. Originally a true medieval fortress, it protected the Breton border with its 1,600 m of ramparts. The last remnants of the ramparts disappeared in 1820. Today, you can still admire Craon’s market halls, built in 1850 and listed as a Historic Monument, which bear witness to the town’s rich economic past, as well as its château.
Many other attractions offering a range of activities are less than 20 minutes away, including the Robert Tatin Museum, Refuge de l’Arche and the Mayenne Valley…
Built in the 14th century and enlarged during the Renaissance, this authentic manor house has undergone no changes to its appearance since the time of Henri IV.
Acquired by its passionate current owners some twenty years ago as a Historic Monument at risk, it has since benefited from extensive restoration work, carried out in keeping with its architecture with the help of renowned professionals.
The manor house comprises a 14th-century wing, enlarged by a 16th-century residential wing at right angles to it. The walls are built of schist and sandstone rubble, rendered with sand and lime. The window surrounds are in sandstone or tuffeau limestone. The building is roofed with Angers slate.
Facing north and south, it offers approximately 470 m² of living space, served by a spiral staircase in the corner tower and a second service staircase.
It comprises:
Ground floor: large drawing room (70 m²) with access to the spiral staircase, dining room (40 m²), kitchen (31 m²), small drawing room (32 m²), bakehouse with stairs leading to the first floor (27.5 m²), laundry room (8 m²), bathroom with shower (10 m²), separate WC.
First floor: 5 bedrooms (44, 40, 34, 18 and 13 m²), landing (26.5 m²), 1 bathroom with shower and WC, 1 shower room with WC.
Second floor: 1 large attic bedroom (46 m² floor area), 1 bathroom with shower, 1 separate WC, attic.
The quality of the interior architecture matches that of the exterior: travertine floors, walls rendered with sand and lime, exposed-beam ceilings, windows fitted with internal wooden shutters, monumental fireplaces, etc.
Arranged around the residence, the outbuildings form a courtyard and comprise:
A/ A large L-shaped stone outbuilding, roofed with slate, comprising: barn (88 m²), 2 workshops (54 and 29 m²), former stable (69 m²) with attic above (69 m²).
B/ Former stone pigsties, roofed with slate, housing the boiler room.
C/ In the 14th-century wing, accessed from outside, a storeroom containing an electric hot-water cylinder and a buffer tank.
The property is approached via a lime-tree avenue leading to a monumental wooden gate framed by a hornbeam hedge.
The courtyard is decorated with potted shrubs and box hedges. Beyond are box hedges and lawns, from which old hedgerows extend.
The manor house stands at the centre of its 1.3 ha parkland, which includes a former moat (500 m²) and meadows (18 ha). The outlines of old bocage hedgerows remain, with centuries-old oak trees standing among them. The estate extends to 19 ha 53 a 50 ca in total.
The residence, its outbuildings and moat (cad. ZD 6, 34, 35) are listed as Historic Monuments by decree of 3 March 1997.
This property benefits from the tax advantages applicable to Historic Monuments.
