DESCRIPTION
The largest privately-owned castle in the Allier and situated on a rocky spur, Château de Veauce dominates the Veauce and Guêle valleys, a strategic site used since Antiquity.
First mentioned in the 11th century, the first major fortifications were built in the 13th century, with a regular layout, circular towers and typical defensive features.
From the 14th century onwards, it became a royal fief, then passed to the Dukes of Bourbon.
During the Hundred Years' War, it was an active bastion.
In the 15th and 16th centuries, it developed into a powerful barony with numerous lands and feudal rights.
Transformed over the centuries, the château retains some medieval traces, but underwent major restoration work during the Renaissance and again in the 19th century under Charles Eugène de Cadier, who modernised the site, created an English-style landscaped park and developed the village's infrastructure.
He became a local political and philanthropic figure.
The estate remained in the family until 1969.
Today, Veauce still embodies the rich feudal, military, religious and rural history of the Auvergne, while keeping alive the legend of Lucie, the ghost of the castle.Set in grounds of over 10 hectares, the castle is arranged around a large courtyard of 1,260 m² and comprises a group of buildings: - To the north, a partially ruined medieval wing flanked by two towers (including the keep with its entrance porch), which included a stable and accommodation.
With a floor surface area of 240 m² (2,153 sq ft), it comprises two stories and attic space.
Behind the building, a 320 m² courtyard enclosed by the ramparts was used as a riding school - to the west, the wing known as the "stables", with its roof and floors that have now collapsed, has a floor surface area of approx.
570 m² and comprised two stories and attic space.
It housed the laundry room, stables, a shed and the wine press.
To the east, the 18th century wing is the best preserved building in the complex.
With three storeys plus attic space, it has a floor surface area of 315 m² per storey.
The ground floor comprises a group of lounges and reception rooms as well as a small kitchen.
The first floor comprises several bedrooms and bathrooms.
The second floor consisted of service quarters.
To the east, a large 425m² terrace serves as the main entrance, with a superb multi-level staircase.
The terrace affords superb views over the surrounding countryside.
- To the south, the 19th century wing spans 530 m² (5,333 sq ft) and comprises four stories plus attic space.
This wing also has several levels of cellars, including wine cellars with hundreds of bottle alcoves.
There is also a cellar dug into the rock that serves as a cistern fed by a spring with abundant, crystal-clear water. The grounds cover more than 10 hectares.
A small river runs through it.
There are two entrances to the property.
The first, in the village, consists of a lodge and a large gate.
The second, at the eastern end of the grounds, also includes a former dwelling and leads to the château via a long wooded driveway over 700 m long.
There are also a number of derelict buildings, including a mill.
The park features magnificent old trees of various species, as well as decorative features such as lava stone basins.Overall, the château is in a very poor state of repair and requires urgent roofing and stabilisation work, estimated to cost 2-3 million euros.
